Red Ribbon Week at Boulder Oaks Elementary School

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Tuesday, students at Boulder Oaks Elementary School in Alpine marked Red Ribbon Week with a special assembly.

DEA agents were at the school for a hands-on demonstration of drug-sniffing dogs.

Students also got a chance to see inside one of the agency's helicopters after it landed on the school's field.

Red Ribbon Week aims to educate kids about the dangers of illegal drugs.

It was started after the kidnapping and murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. Camerena's sister was at Tuesday's event.

"You need to tell them at a very early age the dangers of what are drugs and they'll be aware of the dangers of them and not be experimenting," she said.

The local fire department also brought its equipment to the school.
