Push to change Robert E. Lee Elementary

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A lawmaker representing San Diego is pushing to change the name of Robert E. Lee Elementary school in Paradise Hills.

On Friday, the public was given an opportunity to weigh on the controversial issue over the school named after the Confederate general.

Debate over the school’s name was sparked by national controversy surrounding the confederate flag, which came to a head after the massacre at a historic black church in South Carolina.

The San Diego Unified School District says it will will hold another community meeting on December 2 to report survey results. If there is a 2/3 majority who believe the school should be renamed a Naming Committee will be appointed and a report will be presented to Board of Education. The process could take until April.
