Cashing in on sand dollars at local beaches

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Hundreds of sand dollars have been washing up along local beaches lately.

Sand dollars are the skeletal remains of extremely flattened sea urchins, sea cucumbers and starfish.

To preserve sand dollars, experts say first rinse them in fresh water, and then soak them in a mixture of bleach and water.

CBS News 8's Shannon Handy has the details from La Jolla Shores in this video report.
