Gas station cleanup just pumping up a big mess

EL CAJON (CBS 8) - Residents in an El Cajon neighborhood voiced their concern over a cleanup project that has created a big mess by a company that has been working to replace the soil at a former gas station.

The former gas station was located at the corner of Fletcher Parkway and North Westwind Drive.

"It almost sounds like an airplane hovering around and not moving anywhere," said Andrew Werderman. He works at nearby Smart Auto Repair.

Nail technician at E Roma Day and Spa Salon, Jenny Carnley, said, "it's just a buzz that's always there."

The sound has been coming from a vacant property that once was the site of an Exxon gas station.

According to area residents, the clean up has been under way for years.

Brianne Riipinen who lives in the area said, "our dog freaked out hearing the sound."

It's a noise that made neighbors want to tear their hair out. The latest machine brought in to help with the clean up has been emitting a blaring noise and smell.

"They run it 24-hours a day. It's gotta be really bad for people who live here trying to sleep," said Werderman.

The company in charge of clean up, Cardno ERI, posted signs all over the site, and according to their website, it cleans contaminated groundwater.

Several neighbors called the company to complain. By Tuesday afternoon, someone had stopped by to shut off the machine.

"We were all working and it just got silent like we are used to, and we all started cheering," said Werderman.

According to Heartland Fire, a worker with the City of El Cajon was also called out to the property on Tuesday and is now following up with the company.
