Neighbor rushes to the rescue in Rolando house fire

ROLANDO (CBS 8) - Firefighters rushed to the scene in the Rolando neighborhood Friday, where flames forced a family of four and their dog out of their home. It tore through a bedroom, after the side of a bed caught fire, officials said.

The father says it was caused by a cell phone charger that was near his daughter's bed. The teenager had come home from a long day at school, training to be an EMT.

A neighbor had cuts to his hand, after he ran to the house in the 6800 block of Casita Way and Missy Court and tried to put out the fire with a garden hose around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Thomas Harrison, the father, says he went into a panic and grabbed a fire extinguisher and punched out a bedroom window. He says his neighbor is a hero.

"Thank you, thank you, my buddy Nick, for helping out in there with me," Thomas Harrison, Father said.

The father was treated for a cut to his hand and breathing in too much smoke.

Harrison says his family has owned the house for generations and has never experienced anything like this.

His family will be helped by the Red Cross as they check on insurance for repair work.
