New parking structure opens in Little Italy

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County supervisors Friday opened a 640-space parking garage in Little Italy, a 10-story structure that will be used by county employees during the workday, and by restaurant patrons and shoppers at night and on weekends.

The $36 million structure at Cedar Street and Kettner Boulevard makes up for some of the spaces lost when the Waterfront Park was built outside the County Administration Building.

"The completion of the Waterfront Park did leave many county employees without a nearby place to park," Supervisor Greg Cox said. "The parking structure provides our employees with plenty of parking spaces and it takes care of the neighborhood at the same time."

Project manager Jeff Redlitz said the stalls are wider than in most commercial structures, which will make it easier for drivers and cut down on banging doors into neighboring vehicles.

Open space on two sides of the building will be used for mixed residential and retail development, according to county officials.

The parking structure also includes a public art project that's made out of tire tread impressions made by students at Point Loma Nazarene University.
