Preparing for trouble this Halloween weekend

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - This weekend San Diego's law enforcement will be out in force as San Diegans head out for Halloween parties and trick-or-treating.

Officers are gearing up for a very busy Halloween weekend.

"It's a Saturday night. There is going to be tons of Halloween parties. With Parties comes alcohol, comes drinking and driving," said Lt. Herbert Taft, San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Taft said the department's biggest concern is two nights of partying. Two nights of potential problems. The department has even added extra DUI patrols to the streets.

"Hopefully we can intercept those drunk drivers prior to them hurting themselves or someone," he said.

Drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for tricker-treaters, particularly in residential areas.

"Statistics show a kid is four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween. Have your kids have some sort of lighting on them, whether it's lights or reflective gear," said Lt. Taft.

As for candy, inspect your child's candy closely. With names like Reefers Cup and Pot Tarts, parents need to be aware marijuana laced candy is out there.

Authorities also urge folks to throw out any homemade candy, and stick to candy that is prepackaged.

Other local agencies that will be adding extra patrols this weekend include San Diego Police and National City Police.
