Reminder: Reset your clocks before bedtime Saturday night

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Halloween celebrants can enjoy an extra hour of fun tonight thanks to the switchover to standard time.

Daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, when the clock falls back an hour, marking the start of Pacific Standard Time, which lasts until March 13, 2016.

As always, residents were reminded to roll back their clocks before diving under the sheets and falling asleep.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs also recommends that people use the semi-annual clock-changing exercise to replace batteries for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as emergency flashlights. The battery-changing ritual should include checking that the device has not passed an expiration date, and clearing dust from slots or sensors.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 3,000 people die in residential fires throughout the U.S. each year, and smoke alarms cut the risk of fatality in a house fire by one-half.
