8 people hurt in Los Angeles after truck plows into sidewalk

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The driver of a U-Haul box truck was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following a multi-vehicle crash that injured eight people when the truck careened onto a crowded Los Angeles sidewalk early Sunday, authorities said.

Three of the victims suffered critical injuries in the 1:40 a.m. crash downtown that sheared a hydrant and knocked over a light pole, according to Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Witnesses reported that the U-Haul driver sideswiped another vehicle at the intersection of Spring and Seventh streets, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. S. Bailey.

The U-Haul then struck a motorcyclist and a car that were waiting to make a right turn at the intersection, Bailey said.

The truck continued out of control and hit some pedestrians on the sidewalk, he said.

The motorist, a 40-year-old Los Angeles resident, was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of felony drunken driving, according to Bailey. The suspect's name was not released.
