Second surfer to die at Swami's in a week

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Medical Examiner's Office has identified a female surfer who died while surfing at Swami's Beach in Encinitas Monday morning.

She is the second surfer to die since Friday. Encinitas lifeguards say that conditions were normal and that the woman had suffered a medical emergency while in the water.

Cell phone video from witnesses shows surfers trying to revive the woman who became unresponsive.

"Samaritans had actually assisted in a rescue and brought this person to the beach," said Encinitas Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles.

The Medical Examiner identified the woman as 57-year-old Joy Froding. Froding reportedly said she wasn't feeling well and became unresponsive around 10:30 a.m. The cause of death has yet to be made public.

Friends were overcome with emotion after learning about their friend's passing.

"She was happy, bubbly and joyful. Fitting for her name," said Linda Flores, Joy Froding's friend.

"It was shocking. Just watching someone lie down there and not able to do much about it," said Edgar Hernandez, a witness.

At the top of the stairs at Swami's, flowers surround a makeshift memorial where Joy was well known in the surfing community.

"She was always happy and all about the surf and being down here," said Matt Allen, a friend of Joy.

Allen, who owns Maui's Surf Academy, is still grieving over the loss of 61-year-old Kenny Manns. Manns was another well-known surfer in Encinitas who died Friday.

"It's a blow to the community. Two outstanding people have gone in the same weekend and it's a tragic, big loss," said Allen.

The medical examiner's office determined the Encinitas man drowned, but blunt force trauma to head and chest contributed to his death.

Lifeguards said the latest surfers' deaths are unrelated.
