LA MESA (CNS) - La Mesa police officers are on the lookout Saturday for an armed man who robbed a convenience store.

The thief robbed the AM/PM gas station at 3775 Massachusetts Ave. shortly before 1:30 a.m. Police said the man walked into the store carrying an assault rifle and demanded cash from the store clerk, who complied with his demands.

The man was last seen fleeing the store running eastbound on Waite Drive.

La Mesa officers were joined by the San Diego Police Department's air search team, which used its ABLE helicopter to search the area. An SDPD canine unit was also deployed during the search, but authorities were unable to locate the man.

The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, around 5-foot-9 with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a blue and gray hooded sweatshirt, jeans and a baseball hat.

Police asked anyone with information on the crime to call the La Mesa Police Department, or for those who wish to remain anonymous to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. Tips that lead to an arrest may be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
