One killed in San Marcos car crash

SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A compact SUV and a pickup truck collided on a two-lane North County road Monday afternoon, killing one motorist and sending the other to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m., when a 37-year-old woman lost control of her 2007 Saturn Vue while headed west at high speed in the 500 block of Deer Springs Road in the San Marcos area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, where its passenger side was struck broadside by a 2012 Chevrolet 2500HD, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The driver of the SUV, a San Marcos resident, died at the scene. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

Medics took the 38-year-old Temecula man who had been driving the truck to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for treatment of minor to moderately serious injuries.

The cause of the wreck was under investigation. Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor, Bettencourt said.
