CARLSBAD (CNS) - A freight train struck and killed a man who rolled onto the tracks in Carlsbad early Thursday.

The man was seen lying near the tracks in the vicinity of Oak and Washington avenues but rolled into the path of an approaching northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train around 2 a.m., according to sheriff's Deputy Amber Reeves. The train's engineer hit the brakes, but was unable to stop in time.

The man died at the scene and has yet to be publicly identified.

The southbound Coaster train scheduled to leave Oceanside at 7:42 a.m. was running 15 to 25 minutes behind, according to the North County Transit District.

Although the incident occurred in Carlsbad, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's Coaster/Railroad Enforcement Unit handles law enforcement services along the tracks.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, contact the SDSO at (858) 565-5200.
