Family safely escapes South Park house fire

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Strong winds are blamed for fueling a house fire early Monday morning that displaced a family and evacuated several other homes.

Heavy smoke and flames ripped through the top floor of a three story home in the 1400 block Grove Street, between Ash and Beech streets, was reported shortly before 3 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Fire crews had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the attic where flames broke out. They said a loud noise, possibly a smoke detector, alerted residents.

Firefighters said two adults, including a mother and her baby, made it out safely, and about three nearby homes were evacuated, because of unsafe conditions.

"With the wind blowing it was very strong with embers going there we put two units just on the exposures with hose lines and made sure it stayed into the house and if any embers came out that they were our right away,” said Battalion Chief David Picone with San Diego Fire-Rescue.
Firefighters had the blaze knocked down in about one hour.

"I was horrified with winds whipping in a frenzy. I thought possible fireballs could go to my home or other neighbors, but they were able to contain it," explained Andrew Lucas a neighbor.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation, a fire dispatcher said.
