Former Torero wins N.L. Rookie of the Year award

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former University of San Diego baseball star Kris Bryant was unanimously named the National League's Rookie of the Year Monday.

The 23-year-old Cubs third baseman tied Joc Pederson of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the most home runs by a rookie with 26.

Bryant, from Las Vegas, also knocked in the most runs by a rookie, 99, hit the most doubles, 31, and scored the most runs, 87, as he helped lead the Cubs to the NL Championship Series. He sported a .275 batting average.

Bryant played three seasons at USD, winning the Golden Spikes Award as the best collegiate player two years ago.

The last NL Rookie of the Year with San Diego connections was Dodger first baseman Eric Karros in 1992. Karros grew up in San Diego and played at Patrick Henry High School.
