Rally for Peace takes on special significance

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A rally for peace in City Heights brought attention to the controversy over Syrian refugees seeking asylum in the United States.

Tuesday night's vigil brought together a cross section of San Diego's religious, racial and ethnic groups.

In the aftermath of Friday's attacks in Paris that killed at least 129 people, refugees from Syria are now facing backlash.

Many in attendance, blasted 30 U.S. governors who are against a White House plan to allow nearly 200,000 refugees in the U.S., over the next two years.

Some even call it a political move.

"It seems to me there are some people, especially public officials and politicians, who are trying to take advantage of the incidents in Paris to try to score some cheap political points," Imamtaha Hassane, Islamic Center of San Diego said.

"What I would like people to take away from this is that we are all people who believe in peace," said Pastor Sara Haldemann-Scarr, SD First Church of the Brethren.

Critics say President Obama's plan would allow terrorists to slip into the U.S.
