Police search for murder suspect in deadly Oceanside stabbing

Oceanside police are investigating a fatal stabbing in Oceanside Thursday night.

OCEANSIDE (CBS 8/CNS) - A suspect remains on the loose Friday, after a man was found stabbed to death in Oceanside.

Authorities seek the public's help to find whoever fatally stabbed a 32-year-old man near Oceanside City Beach.

The victim, later identified as Joseph Prince, was initially thought to have been struck by a vehicle along Wisconsin Street near South Meyers Street, but responding officers found him lying unconscious in the roadway suffering from stab wounds around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.

Prince died at the scene.

Prince became involved in a brief altercation with the suspect and was stabbed with a screwdriver. It was not immediately clear what the fight was about.

Surveillance video of Prince riding his bike moments before he got into, what police say, was an argument with another man.

A witness couldn't believe what he saw.

"It's almost surreal. You know, seeing someone laying in the street in a pool of blood, you know. And the fact of the brutality of it happening in middle of the day, you know. People are coming home from work and that's happening on the street," one witness said.

Witnesses told police a possible suspect fled the area on a black beach cruiser bicycle. He was described as a white man of about 30 wearing a red baseball cap and blue jeans.

Anyone with information on the possible suspect was asked to call Oceanside police at (760) 435-4428.
