SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego police say they've made contact with the driver who fatally struck a woman crossing a street in the Bay Ho neighborhood, then ditched the car nearby.

The woman was identified as 60-year-old Maria Salgado.

Authorities were in the process of obtaining a warrant Friday morning. Officers say someone told the driver to give herself up to authorities, but she refused.

CBS News 8 tracked down the owner the vehicle. A person who answered the door said they had no comment.

Officers say Salgado was crossing the street when she was hit by a speeding Ford Fusion. Paramedics attempted CPR, but she didn't make it.

The woman died at the scene around 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the 4300 block of Clairemont Drive.

"I still can't imagine she's dead. I just talked to her yesterday. She was always there for me," said Maria's son, Ramon Salgado.

Moments later, about a mile away, a witness told police that a female driver parked a car with front-end and windshield damage at the 3800 block of Chippewa court and started running.

"He said some lady came out in the dark clutching a purse, then she walked down Chippewa, one witness said.

Police say they have talked to the suspected driver- but the case is still under investigation.
