SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A closing ceremony was held Sunday for the end of the annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day, which raises funds for breast cancer programs in San Diego.

San Diego hosts the largest 3-Day event in the country and this year $5.9 million was raised.

Participants began the nearly 60-mile walk Friday, November 20 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and spent Saturday in the beach areas.

Three-quarters of the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen's Research and Training Grant Program and large public health outreach programs for women and men facing breast cancer. The remaining 25 percent helps fund local community and affiliate support and outreach programs.

CBS 8 is a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen San Diego 3-Day. Barbara-Lee Edwards participated in the event for the 12th time and this was year number seven for CBS News 8 Meteorologist Matt Baylow.

In San Diego, six women are diagnosed each day with breast cancer. Every walker must raise at least $2300 to participate, and since its inception, the 3-Day has raised more than $800 million to find a cure.
