Heroic neighbor rescues pets from El Cajon house fire

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - One neighbor sprang into action, risking his own safety to rescue trapped pets in El Cajon Tuesday morning. He broke in windows to help.

Firefighters say neighbors called 911, terrified. They say that the homeowner was not at home when flames broke out, but several of his pets were trapped inside. A Good Samaritan rushed in to rescue the animals from harm.

Crews say heavy fire and smoke started in the back of the small house, causing serious damage. Flames ripped through the home after midnight, leaving the charred aftermath at the 1100 block of West Chase Avenue. A neighbor says he saw flames and jumped into action.

"I had to smash the windows to free the four dogs and a cat. Luckily the fire department showed up. Otherwise, I could've gotten trapped in there, too, with the dog," Anthony Menchaca said

Firefighters say it started in the kitchen and could be a total loss. SDG&E shut off gas to neighboring homes for safety.

Crews had it contained in 15 minutes. No one was hurt.
