Tree trimmer killed after being hit by pickup in Valley Center

VALLEY CENTER (CBS 8/CNS) - A pickup truck struck and killed a tree trimmer Tuesday near Valley Center High School.
The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m., when the landscaper walked onto Cole Grade Road near Margarita Lane, crossing directly into the path of the southbound 2004 GMC Sierra, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the driver remained at the scene.
The vehicle hit a 26-year-old Escondido man at about 35 mph, CHP public information Officer Jim Bettencourt said. The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.

"It was just a loud bang and I heard someone scream. I just came down here and then it was unfortunate he was already gone. They were doing CPR and  trying to resuscitate him and it was sad. They had been out here for a few days. I just talked to him yesterday,' said a Valley Center resident who did not want to be identified.
Intoxication did not appear to be a factor in the accident, according to Bettencourt.
"At this time, it is unknown if any charges will be filed in this case," he said in the early afternoon.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
