Local business fear flash mob could be trouble

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - "Krispy Kreme Tuesdays" are well-known events around southern California, and hundreds of car enthusiasts are expected to meet up at a local Krispy Kreme shop Tuesday night.

Some worry the gear-head gathering could bring trouble, some businesses are hoping this flash mob fizzles out.

Organizer Jeremy Lee said the gatherings are “literally like a free car show for the public.”

Lee is behind Krispy Kreme Tuesdays, a night where car enthusiasts come from all over southern California.

In past meet ups in Burbank, thousands showed up.

“There are a lot of cars that will come. You know owners that have something special they really don't bring out all the time, but they'll bring out tonight,” said Lee.

The company they've named their event after is not too happy about the car enthusiasts using their location.

The company that owns the Clairemont Crispy Kreme reached out to the group on Facebook saying they do not sponsor their event, asked them to move it, and said it could negatively affect them and other businesses.

Another business manager said they're worried about vandalism.

“You know a parking lot is designed to be parked in. So people just park. Food is meant to be bought so we buy food. There's really nothing that's ever happened at these events that has caused a big safety issue,” said Lee.

Lee did admit there have been some minor issues. A few arrests in the past, but mostly traffic citations. He's pleading with anyone who comes to behave.

Lee asked for no burnouts, no racing, no hating, and respect.

“I think the whole car community has been stigmatized. You know the sad part is recently we've been trying to do something more legal, and the owners of these properties are kind of thinking everyone is gang related or trouble makers,” he said.

He plans to show people they're different, and they're coming no matter what.

“At the end of the day if I want to get a doughnut , I should not’t have to fear to walk in and get a doughnut ,” he said laughingly.

“Krispy Kreme Tuesdays” began in Burbank in 2007.
