San Diego Gulls fall to the Texas Stars

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Gulls allowed the first four goals, then scored three unanswered goals in the third period, but were unable to get the equalizer in a 5-3 loss to the Texas Stars Wednesday  night at Valley View Casino Center.

Brandon Montour's goal with 12 minutes, 57 seconds to play pulled the Gulls to within one, but Travis Morin scored with 10:07 left to again give the
Stars a two-goal lead.

Mike Sgarbossa opened the scoring for the Gulls 2:47 into the third period. Joseph Cramarossa scored for the Gulls 1:10 later.

Texas defenseman Esa Lindell scored the game's first goal on a power play 7:03 into the first period. Brendan Ranford scored on a breakaway for the Stars (11-7-0-1) at 17:01 of the first period.

Texas rookie center Devin Shore scored his team-leading 13th goal at 10:28 of the second period. The Stars, the Dallas Stars American Hockey League affiliate, increased their lead to 4-0 32 seconds later on Justin Dowling's goal.

Texas goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 17 of 20 shots to improve his record to 3-3. Gulls goalie Matt Hackett stopped 30 of 35 shots in his first action since Nov. 14.

John Gibson, who had been the Gulls' No. 1 goaltender, starting 13 of their first 16 games, was recalled by the Anaheim Ducks, the Gulls NHL parent team, on Tuesday because Freddy Andersen had the flu, a Ducks official said.

The loss before a crowd announced at 6,406 was the sixth straight for the Gulls (9-7-0-1).

The Gulls will next play Friday, facing the Ontario Reign, the Los Angeles Kings AHL affiliate, at the Valley View Casino Center.
