SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - In recognition of world AIDS day, UC San Diego sponsored a number of events throughout Tuesday, including a display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

World AIDS Day was established on December 1, 1988 and is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. The day is also dedicated to mourning those who have died from the disease.

The three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on display at UCSD are inspired by San Diego organizations and individuals related to the AIDS crisis, from the early years to the present day. The event at UCSD also includes a presentation on HIV prevention, artistic performances, stories from young people living with HIV and more.

"World AIDS Day is an opportunity for the UC San Diego community to join people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS," said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "At UC San Diego, we are dedicated to conducting innovative research and providing advanced care to treat patients and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
