Carlsbad's Pizza Shuttle facing eviction

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Family-operated Pizza Shuttle in Carlsbad is being tossed from its spot that it has held for 24 years.

As word spread of its uncertain future, customers began signing a petition hoping to convince the Beverly Hills landlord to keep Pizza Shuttle at its location.

Pizza Shuttle has less than a month to move out but according to the owners they need to close on December 20 to allow time to move their equipment.

"It breaks my heart. We have been going through the grieving process as if we lost a child," said Pizza Shuttle's co-owner Britt Eubanks.

A representative for the landlord said a Subway will be replacing it in 2016.

"It's kind of a staple. It's been here since I was a kid, and I hate to see it go," said Matt Brownell.

Former employee and current customer Kimberly Fluharty said, "to hear that it's being replaced by a Subway makes it worse. When you think of Subway, it's nothing compared to the food that is in here at all."

During the week of Thanksgiving, the co-owners of Pizza Shuttle received an eviction notice from the landlord that stated they needed to be out by December 31.

"It's not right. It's corporate greed running small businesses off," said Eubanks.

CBS News 8 spoke to Greg Hinds who works for the landlord. He said that in 2014, Pizza Shuttle did not elect to extend its five year lease. They have been on a month-to-month lease since then. Eubanks said it's not illegal, but it is bad business.

A Carlsbad City spokesperson said the City Council members have put them in touch with economic development to help them find a new location.

A representative for the landlord said they spoke with a Pizza Shuttle partner and offered transitional assistance. However, the owners do not know if they will move.
