First-grader dragged nearly a mile by school bus

(CBS 8/CNN) - A six-year-old little girl was dragged for almost a mile clutching the inside of her school bus after the driver closed the door on her arm and drove off, according to a report from WGHP in High Point, North Carolina.

"Just to realize what had happened to her, it just tore me up," said the girl's father, John Klepzig.

Chelsea Klepzig, a first-grader at Union Cross Elementary School was supposed to get off the bus as her grandmother waited for her at the school bus stop. But Chelsea's exit didn't happen as her grandmother watched the bus drive off ... along with Chelsea when her arm got stuck on the bus door.

The grandmother followed the bus for almost a mile with Chelsea's feet dangling from the school bus the entire way. "She just fall off to the ground and they didn't even know it," said Chelsea's grandmother.

Chelsea's socks, pants and shoes were ripped up but she was okay with some minor bruises and scratches.

Chelsea's mom says, "I'm glad her foot wasn't damaged more than it was."

She also said had Chelsea's arm not been stuck in the door as far up as it was she probably wouldn't have been able to keep herself off the ground.

"That's the only way that she was able to hold on and go along with the bus. Otherwise, if it was just her hand I'm sure it would have slipped and she would have fell underneath the bus," said Chelsea's mom.

WGHP reports the 78-year-old substitute bus driver was suspended without pay and recommended for dismissal. He eventually resigned.
