Half bike, half car, total fun

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - More and more these days commuters across America are getting to work using sunshine and sweat instead of gasoline.

The solar powered trike is called an ELF.

The ELF is a solar and pedal hybrid vehicle powered by the rider and the sun. According to its website, the ELF is the "most efficient vehicle on the planet," and gets the equivalent of 1,800 MPG.

The little red roadster in the video above is half-car, half-bike and its owner is Joy Schumacher.

Schumacher admitted she first learned about the roadster last spring while watching CBS News 8.

It's the perfect joy ride for Joy because the 58-year-old had a knee replacement that prevents her from riding a bike uphill without a boost.

Joy is an elementary school P.E. Teacher who like to set a good example for her students.

The trike's top speed is 30-miles-per-hour, and it's like driving a golf cart, expect it does not have reverse.

The starting price for an ELF is $5,500, and in case you were wondering, ELF stands for electric-light-and fun.

Watch the video above as Jeff takes Joy's ELF for a spin.
