K9 care packages to benefit war dogs

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Military dogs are being honored this holiday season in San Diego.

Gunner, a retired military dog who served in Afghanistan for several years, was on hand at a special event Wednesday night at the Valencia Hotel’s Cafe La Rue in La Jolla. The Café joined forces with Rancho Coastal Humane Society to help raise donations for Operation K9 Care.

Operation K9 Care is a program designed to help create care packages to send to U.S. military working dogs and their handlers. Items gathered include treats, toys and gear, such as summer and winter mats, chew toys and nail clippers.

The Care program began in 2002 when packages were sent to the dogs with items intended to protect them from the harsh weather and terrain. Some of those items included Doogles, cooling vests and boots.

Donations can be dropped off at the Valencia Hotel until the end of December and will be mailed the first week of January. Financial donations can also be made online to the U.S. War Dogs Association. Click here to see what items are needed.

A new law now allows military dogs to return home to U.S. soil, giving their handlers an opportunity to adopt them. Before, they were left behind like the equipment.
