SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A suspected 16-year-old drug smuggler was arrested Wednesday afternoon after border patrol agents discovered packages of heroin strapped to his body.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. when a commercial bus arrived at a checkpoint near the Indio Station on Highway 86 and underwent a secondary immigration check. During the inspection, Border Patrol agents encountered the teen who appeared visibly nervous. A pat down of the teen led to the discovery of four packages of heroin wrapped around his abdomen and held in place by a woman's spandex body suit.

"The agents of the El Centro Sector Border Patrol continue to safeguard our nation and its citizens by keeping dangerous drugs such as these from reaching our streets," said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Roy Villareal.

The heroin weighed 3.85 pound and is worth an estimated street value of $46,000.

The teen, a United States citizen, was turned over to the DEA for further investigation.
