Fire damages several garages, six cars in Chula Vista

The cause of a fire that damaged several garage units and vehicles early Sunday morning in Chula Vista is under investigation, an official said.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - The cause of a fire that damaged several garage units and vehicles early Sunday morning in Chula Vista is under investigation, an official said.

Firefighters responded to an apartment complex at 580 Telegraph Canyon Road at 2:30 a.m. to find a detached garage unit aflame, said Richard Brocchini, battalion chief for the San Diego Fire Department.

"Someone came knocking on my door around 2 a.m. and they told me my garage was on fire, my car is on fire. We just heard popping, probably the wheels popping and maybe canisters and stuff we may have had inside the garages," said resident David Guzman.

Firefighters contained the blaze, but returned around 6:30 a.m. after something caused the fire to start up again, Brocchini said.

There were no injuries, but three garages were "significantly" affected and six vehicles were damaged.

Brocchini said investigators don't know exactly where the fire started in the detached garage unit, and there was no damage estimate at this time.
