IMPERIAL BEACH (CBS 8) - A man is being called a hero, after he wrestled a shotgun away from a suspect in front of a 7-11 store in Imperial Beach.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning. Sheriff's deputies swarmed the parking lot in Imperial Beach.

They say a man with dreadlocks and a guitar did not hesitate to punch a suspect and snatch his 12-gauge shotgun, protecting a woman.

The two victims say the suspect aimed the weapon at the woman who tried to push it away. She was smacked in the mouth.

They say it started when the man drove up in a Dodge Magnum and randomly targeted the two. San Diego County Sheriff's deputies say the victims didn't know each other or the suspect.

"He just got off and wanted to fight. Then he came out of the car and hit the female with a rifle," said Sgt. Leonel Gurrole, SD Co. Sheriff's Dept.

Deputies say the man sat on the suspect and pinned him down until they arrived at the 1300 block of Imperial Beach Boulevard.

Sheriff's deputies arrested the man and he will be charged for assault with a deadly weapon. They believe he was drinking alcohol.

The woman credits the man with the guitar for possibly saving her life.
