Cancer survivor among the victims in rental scam

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Last week Anthony Joseph Green was arrested for multiple theft offenses. Green has a history of responding to Craigslist posts for people who are in search of an apartment to rent.

When police released Green's photo this month, they wanted to identify victims.

One woman said she recognized his face and believes Green is the man who nearly left her homeless during her chemo.

Angelica is a single mother of a five-year-old and was fighting stage three breast cancer. She was forced out of her rental because it was being sold.

Angela was desperate to rent a new home using Craigslist.

"I was in the middle of chemo battling with my own body shutting down. I had my five-year-old son relying on me, and I didn't expect to get emotional, and here is this guy who never gave me, not a dime back," she said.

Police said 29-year-old Anthony Green would use Craigslist to collect deposits but never give victims a key, or their money back.

Angelica said Green used the name "Corey Nelson."

According to police, in some cases Green would use his real name. On Facebook Green said he was U.S. Navy rescue swimmer who was deploying.

"He played it so smooth. Like, I did not feel like I needed to question him," said Angelica.

Angelica said Green did show her a furnished home in the 1600 block of D Street in National City. According to Angelica, Green did have a key and a lease. She paid him $200 cash and wrote him a $300 check.

Angelica said she was so ill form the chemo she had to be rushed to the ER and never received a key. That was the last time she saw Green.

"I was texting him like crazy - you left me homeless with my son. I don't know if I am going to live through this. I am battling cancer - This guy obviously does not care. He just wanted money and whatever he could get it from," she said.

It has now been eleven months since Angelica was allegedly scammed by Green. She is now cancer free and has her own home.

Green is charged with violating parole, and prosecutors said he was convicted of violent crimes, including robbery.

Green also faces felony grand theft. He is being held on $75,000 bail.

If you believe that you were a victim of an unreported crime involving Green, you are asked to contact the San Diego Police Department at (619) 531-2000, San Diego Police Acting Detective Sarah Calvert at (619) 692-4800 or call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
