Local firefighters help Santa pass out gifts

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Local families in need celebrated Christmas early this year when Santa Clause himself arrived at their homes Monday morning.

It's all part of the San Diego firefighters mobile Santa, an event that's now become an annual tradition.

In partnership with San Diego City schools and corporate sponsors, Santa alongside several volunteers travel the city delivering presents to low-income neighborhoods where anyone can walk up and receive a gift.

Some families were nominated by their school counselors. In total, nine families were sponsored this year, including Izella Ortiz’s.

“I’ve never seen this before. It’s nice. It’s very nice,” said Ortiz.

Equipped with boxes with personalized names, Santa passed out a stack of presents. Everywhere he went, he was greeted with smiles and hugs.

“It’s a group effort and everybody gets involved all the years we have had. There’s a lot of nice sponsors who have taken care of families over the years,” said Mar Davis with the San Diego Fire Department.

Close to 5,000 presents were collected to make Monday’s even possible.
