Father saves child from fallen tree in Santee playground

SANTEE (CBS 8) - A 5-year-old girl and her father were hospitalized after a tree fell on them at a playground in Santee, according to San Diego Sheriff's deputies.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Big Rock Park near the 8100 block of Arlette Street.

The father saw what was about to happen and pushed his daughter out of the way, taking the brunt of the impact.

Witnesses said there was no noise, no indication the tree was about to fall on the playground filled with kids.

"As a father you always want to make sure your kids are safe first and foremost and for me I would have done the exact same thing in this situation," said Eric Jesperson.

Witnesses told CBS 8 that the man was conscious, but stuck under the tree.

It took a little bit for firefighters to get the man out and safely transport him to the hospital.

The man's 5-year-old daughter also suffered some scrapes after she was pushed out of the way.

Both were taken to the hospital for "mild" injuries, firefighters said.

At the time winds were about 20 to 25 miles an hour.

"I think the key thing in these situations with high winds is just to be observant as parents and be aware there are potentials," said Bat. Chief Tim Stuber, Santee Fire Dept.

So far this is the only reported tree down in Santee. Crews will be out here for a while taking the tree apart.
