Shoppers cash in on post-holiday bargains

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Christmas is over, but it was another busy day out there for shoppers.

Many people are returning and exchanging unwanted gifts, while others are cashing in on gift cards and searching for post-holiday bargains.

According to the National Retail Federation, Christmas sales this year reached about $630 billion, but an estimated 15 percent of shoppers across the country will end up in the return lines, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for stores, because many end up purchasing more.

Shoppers said the deals were just too good to pass up.

Kristy Esau said now is the time to buy wrapping paper, in every color and pattern.

"We ran out of wrapping paper this year, so we're stocking up for next year," she said.

Other shoppers, like, 8-year-old Leland Haskins and his dad came out on another mission, to spend that gift card.

"He got a gift card for Christmas so we're here to spend it," his father said.

All is well, Leland said, because Santa brought him everything on his list.
