Up, up and away with the Holiday Bowl Balloon Parade

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It was an amazing sight along the Embarcadero Wednesday morning - giant balloons cruising down Harbor Drive. The 25th Annual Holiday Bowl Parade is the largest in the nation and draws people from all over the country.

Tuesday night crews were inflating this year's balloons and the showstopper has only made one appearance in another parade, which was in Dallas. Kids also stopped by to catch a glimpse of the balloons that would be floating in the parade.

The Holiday Bowl Parade is the largest balloon parade in the nation with a total of 25 balloons that float down Harbor Drive. Joining the balloons were 16 marching bands, a half dozen floats, more than 200 volunteers, hundreds of parade goers as well as both Trojan and Badgers fans.

Parade staff wouldn’t discuss security measures with media but they say with recent world events, security protocol has been addressed with the San Diego Police Department.

The parade was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. on Harbor Drive and stretches from the County Building down to Seaport Village. Organizers recommended that parade goers use the trolley for transportation. The Holiday Bowl football game featuring the USC Trojans vs The University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers starts at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Some of the footage used in this video story was shot using a GoPro camera.
