Wife killed by husband on New Year's Day identified

A 41-year-old man reported to authorities that he shot and killed his wife Friday at their home in unincorporated El Cajon, a sheriff's lieutenant said.

EL CAJON (CNS) - A woman shot to death on New Year's Day, allegedly by her husband, was identified by the medical examiner Saturday as Mary Katherine Faanunu, 34.

At about 12:34 a.m. Friday, dispatchers got a 911 a call from Hauati Faanunu, 41, a resident at 8202 Melrose Lane in unincorporated El Cajon, Sheriff's Homicide Lt. Kenn Nelson said.

"The caller stated he had just shot his wife," Nelson said.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Lakeside Substation "discovered a dead adult female with trauma to her upper body," Nelson said. "No one else was home."

A short time later, Faanunu turned himself in at the El Cajon Police Department, Nelson said. Sheriff's deputies arrested him at the police station.

The medical examiner Saturday also completed an autopsy on Mary Faanunu.

"The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide," the medical examiner said.
