Duplex fire under investigation in Spring Valley

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A man escapes a house fire, but sadly not all of his pets made it out alive Thursday morning.

Investigators have questions about how the fire started in Spring Valley. They're even calling it suspicious.

The homeowner escaped safely from the 900 block of Correa Lane Wednesday night, but his pet cockatoo died.

Firefighters rushed to the scene where flames ripped through the second floor and attic of the four bedroom home.

The man says his house has been in foreclosure for three years. Online, it's estimated to be worth about $500,000.

Arson investigators looked through the property to try and determine if it was torched on purpose.

Cal Fire, Bonita, San Diego and San Miguel firefighters responded before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

"No rescues to my knowledge and no reported injuries. There was one bird in the house, which I understand firefighters were able to get out," said Capt. Kendal Bortisser, Cal Fire.

The sheriff's department and their arson team are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the homeowner with food and shelter.
