Rep. Hunter will be Trump's envoy to Congress

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Donald Trump has tapped Congressman Duncan Hunter Jr. to help lead his campaign outreach to Congress.

Hunter who represents San Diego endorsed Mr. Trump last month.

Congressman Hunter will join Chris Collins of New York to head up Trump's U.S. House Leadership Committee.

The two were actually the first in Congress to endorse Trump, despite the fact many within the Republican Party have opposed the presidential candidate.

Currently, Trump has received the endorsement of only seven members of the House of Representatives, despite being the front runner.Trump is hoping

Hunter and Collins will act as liaisons and help him increase that number.

Political analyst Laura Fink said Donald Trump's decision to have Representatives Hunter and Collins garner support for him within his own party isn't common, given his front runner status, but in this case, it's crucial.

"When you only have two-percent of all of the Republicans in the House of Representatives, you've got a lot of work to do. Trump knows that," said Fink.

According to Fink, having Congressional support will not necessarily win Trump the nomination, but it does help.

In a statement, Trump said, “he is honored to have their support and that they share his vision.”

Last month when Hunter endorsed Trump he said, "he’s not a policy wonk, he's a leader. And I think we need a leader as president."

Hunter further added that more members of Congress would come out of the “Donald Trump closet.”

CBS News reached out to Congressman Hunter’s office, but he is traveling to Israel and was unavailable for comment.
