"Reading and Riding for Taylor" raises awareness

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A young girl's cross country journey has brought her to San Diego.

Taylor Chisolm lost her ability to read after brain surgery for epileptic seizures and is just one of the many things she is having to re-learn.

Ten-year-old Taylor used to be an avid and enthusiastic young reader, but three years ago, she underwent brain surgery to treat her condition. Taylor suffered from epileptic seizures since she was ten-months-old.

After the third operation, Taylor lost her ability to read and more than three years of progress was wiped out. According to her mother Lakisha Chisolm, she pinky-promised her little girl she would be able to read again one day.

Not getting the assistance or resources she felt she needed to help Taylor at home in Texas, Lakisha took a leap of faith and hit the road in her 2007 Toyota.

"I took everything out of my savings, I took my kids out of school and I came up with this idea and 30 days later, were are in San Diego," said Lakisha.

Lakisha and Taylor are driving around the country on a 90-day road trip in search of answers and meeting with literacy experts while raising awareness.

"I am in search of funds, answers, prayers, a solution. My ultimate goal is my daughter reading again," she said.

Taylor said she is determined to be able to read again.

"I know there's a solution. There is someone out there that has gone thru that and they have the answer," said Lakisha.
