Backlash against plan to widen India Street

Lined with restaurants and shops, India Street is a popular destination for San Diegans.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Lined with restaurants and shops, India Street is a popular destination for San Diegans.

So popular there is a plan in the works to widen it to four lanes between Washington and Laurel streets, but critics said the plan will wipe out parking which is already a nightmare.

Residents and businesses had no idea about the Airport Authority's proposal but they hope it's not too late to stop it.

By 2030, India Street from Laurel to Washington could expand from three lanes to four lanes, erasing parking.

"We can't lose our parking. I understand the problem is it's heavily traveled. They need another lane, but if we lose parking, people can't get in and out their houses or businesses," said Rick Trovato, who owns multiple Middletown businesses.

Councilman Todd Gloria said he was unaware of the plan.

The Airport Authority was not available for comment. Both are invited to the Uptown Planners meeting next month to discuss the master plan.
