Woman in SWAT standoff in police custody

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman believed to be suicidal and possibly armed with a shotgun holed up Wednesday in her Bay Park apartment when officers tried to contact her, prompting a five-hour standoff that ended with her arrest.

Patrol personnel went to the residence in the 3100 block of Clairemont Drive about 1:30 p.m. to check on a report that a renter there was threatening to do harm to herself or may already have done so, according to San Diego police.

After the woman refused for hours to surrender, officers called in a SWAT team to take up positions around the building and prepare to forcibly enter, if necessary.

During the stalemate, the barricaded resident shouted obscenities out her windows at police, sounding drunk, according to broadcast reports from the scene.

The woman was taken into custody just before 6:30 p.m., Officer Robert Heims said. Her name, condition and details on her arrest were not immediately available.
