Attempted robbery suspect arraigned downtown

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of involvement in a botched armed robbery at a Fashion Valley mall jewelry store pleaded not guilty Wednesday to attempted robbery and weapons allegations.

Reginald Anthony Howard, 28, was ordered held on $250,000 bail.

Deputy District Attorney Amy Maund told Judge David Szumowksi that Howard and four others entered the Royal Maui jewelry store about 8 p.m. last Saturday and were quickly confronted by a security guard.

Maund said the guard drew his gun, prompting Howard to pull his own gun, but the defendants fled through the mall. The prosecutor said the security guard fired off a shot but no one was hit. A gun was recovered nearby, police said.

Howard and Joey James Levy were arrested later, but three suspects remain at large, according to authorities.

Maund said Levy bailed out of custody and will be arraigned Monday.

Howard -- who has a prior robbery conviction -- faces 21 years in prison if convicted, Maund said.

A readiness conference was set for April 15 and a preliminary hearing for April 19.
