Tijuana's former top cop called "Mexico's Bravest Man"

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The former police chief of Tijuana took a stand against Mexico's notorious drug cartels and almost paid with his life more than once.

Now, he is the subject of the documentary film, "Mexico's Bravest Man," that will be screened in San Diego this coming weekend.

From shootings to almost being poisoned, Julian Leyzaola has been the victim of eight assassination attempts. Seven of those assassination attempts were when Leyzaola served as police chief.

The eighth attempt occurred in May of 2015, and left him paralyzed from the waste down.

In the new film, he talks about those attempts and why despite all that, he still wants to be in the public eye.

Charlie Minn is no stranger to making films in the heart of Mexico's drug war zone, and his latest is the seventh film he has done. According to Minn, it's possibly the most powerful one.

The 85-minute film chronicles Leyzaola's experiences and questions whether or not he is corrupt like many Mexican police officials are.

Despite all the assassination attempts, Leyzaola is running for mayor of Tijuana.

Minn told CBS News 8 there has never been proof of any wrongdoing on Leyzaola's part. Leyzaola has gone on the record to say he will not negotiate with cartels.

On Sunday, the movie will air at the UltraStar theater in Mission Valley. Both Minn and Leyzaola are expected to attend and security will be tight.
