New hand rail guiding vets to new lives

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The last thing a combat veteran with post-traumatic stress needs is more stress.

CBS News 8's Jeff Zevely met some veterans in Vista who were caught up in red tape and unable to move into a new Wounded Warrior home.

Jeff traveled to Vista to walk through the new home and was shocked to discover our vets were not allowed to move into the home because of a six-inch snag.

The entire Wounded Warrior house was given to Mia Roseberry's program, founder of Wounded Warrior Homes, as a donation. The home was built in another state with a railing system that was 36-inches high, but the problem was that in California, by code, deck railing needs to be 42-inches high or no one can live the house.

With no more code violation, the new railing will allow veterans to enjoy a new kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom.

Jeff reports with a follow-up we can all smile about.
