Group rebuilds home for disabled veteran

When the family of a disabled Marine Corps veteran needed a helping hand, the community rallied.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - When the family of a disabled Marine Corps veteran needed a helping hand, the community rallied.

Last Fall, a drunk driver crashed into the Jackson family home, knocking the residence off it's foundation in more ways than one.

For months the Jacksons did not have running water or electricity and rodents started entering their home through a gap in the wall.

The crash caused $60,000  in damage, but the Jacksons only received a $16,000 insurance settlement. A contractor walked away with most of that money.

Arlene and her husband have five children, two of which  their still raising.

Out of options, the family reached out to Rebuilding Together San Diego and in short order, the reinforcements arrived to help.

The non-profit group brought volunteers from USD, Choice Steels and Booz-Allen Hamilton

Project manager Deanne Hutchison said the Jacksons are givers and it was time for the struggling family to receive.

By mid-May, the volunteers said the Jacksons will essentially have a new home.

Rebuilding San Diego is always looking for sponsors and volunteers.
