Success Story: Mia and Chris

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local family is celebrating a major milestone this month with the finalization of two adoptions.

Nine-year-old Mia and six-year-old Chris were matched with their forever family about a year and a half ago and the whole family says they can't imagine life any other way.

Just 18 months ago, support is something that Chris and his sister Mia didn’t have, but now that the biological siblings have found a forever family unconditional love and encourage is all they get.

The kids are now part of a foursome. Derek says that even before they decided to adopt, they'd seen firsthand what a gift it is.

“My wife Amy has a brother who's adopted, so she knew a little bit about that, and what her brother has added to their family and how special that is,” added Derek.

So adding Mia and Chris to their family just made sense.

“We knew early on there was such a need for older kids and for siblings,” said Amy. “We just really wanted to be able to keep siblings together, so we thought, we have room in our family, we have room in our house and room in our hearts, why not us?”

Mia admits that she was skeptical in the beginning, thinking “who are these people.” And then the children said they thought “what if we don’t behave, what if they’re going to give us back to foster care?” But what actually happened was, Mia and Chris were shown nothing but love.

Twelve-year-old Kaylin and nine-year-old Trevor say they are thrilled their family has grown.

“I love having a sister who I can play games with, and we have a lot of fun together,” added Kaylin.

“Pretty happy like he said it's really fun playing with him. Having a little brother is. I'm really glad I have one, and an almost twin sister, it's really fun, having that goes to my same school, someone my age,” Trevor said.

And now it's finally official. On April 1, a year and a half after Mia and Chris first joined the family, they celebrated their adoption finalization day.

“We could've certainly easily come up with a ton of reasons why not to do it. There's a lot of fear involved, in not knowing, uncertainly, yeah uncertainty, but it has been so worth it though,” said Amy.

On Adopt 8, we feature children who are considered "difficult to place" because they are older, or have special needs. This past year, wishes came true for several children featured on Adopt 8 who have been matched with a forever family, but many are still waiting to find a permanent home.
