Fire breaks out in Normal Heights apartment complex

San Diego firefighters are on the scene of a structure fire in Normal Heights.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire of unknown origin spread through a Normal Heights apartment Tuesday afternoon, leaving one resident with a minor burn injury and displacing a family of five.

The blaze erupted just before 5 p.m. in the 4700 block of Hawley Boulevard, just north of Adams Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

While extinguishing the flames, firefighters rescued three children from an adjoining unit, SDFRD Capt. Joe Amador said. It took the personnel about 20 minutes to get the blaze under control.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the residents of the scorched apartment -- two adults and three children -- arrange for interim lodging.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
