SAN DIEGO (AP) - Drew Pomeranz struck out a career-high 10 and held Pittsburgh to four singles and Matt Kemp homered to lead the San Diego Padres to an 8-2 victory over the Pirates on Wednesday night.
The Padres have taken the first two of three games against the Pirates for their first home series win this season.
Pomeranz's previous career high in strikeouts was eight, accomplished twice before, most recently Thursday at Philadelphia. Only two Pirates baserunner reached scoring position against Pomeranz (2-1) over 6 2/3 innings.
San Diego roughed up lefty Jeff Locke (0-2) for eight runs and 11 hits in three-plus innings.
Kemp hit his fifth homer leading off the fourth. It was estimated at 441 feet off Locke into the Padres' bullpen beyond the fence in left-center.
