SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Three people were displaced after a fire tore through their Ocean Beach apartment Saturday evening.

The fire broke out around 8:50 p.m. in a first floor apartment at the Greencliff Apartments in the 4000 block of Greene Street. A woman and two young children who lived in the apartment were able to get out safely.

A total of 28 people were evacuated from the building as a precaution while crews from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department extinguished the flames. Firefighters had the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes.

Firefighters say one of the residents was injured after he tried to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries and didn't need to be transported to the hospital. Two of the second floor apartments sustained minor smoke damage.

The woman and her two children are currently receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
